Feminist Porn Awards and Conference

This is just a brief blog post to express my sincere and immense excitement for today and tomorrow. Tonight is the Feminist Porn Awards, which definitely makes my heart sing. As someone who is very strongly feminist and kind of an artsy dorky queer into transgressive sex and way over-intellectualizing it, it’s pretty much my home. It’s also in my hometown (Toronto represent!) and organized by the sex toy store where I bought my first vibrator way back when… It just feels right. This year, we’re up for two awards, so I may even get to stride up onstage and accept an awesome buttplug statuette again. I say again because The Art of Blowjob was an honoured website in 2011 and I got to give a very adorably enthusiastic speech. It used to be up on Youtube, but I can’t find it anymore. Sigh. Such is life. Suffice it to say, I talk with my hands more than the sign language interpreter. That is a feat in and of itself.

Then tomorrow is one of the biggest things of my young life: I’m speaking at the University of Toronto for the first ever Feminist Porn Conference. It’s run by Tristan Taormino, who is one of my biggest porn idols and just about every single person I adore in the industry will be speaking. I’m representing beautiful porn while trying to delve into the way aesthetics frame how we name and categorize porn, and how that engages with women and more traditionally artistically-inclined audiences. It feels a little radical. I hope I don’t ruffle too many feathers… But, maybe a few.

I’m less than a month shy of my three year anniversary working in porn and I feel like things have picked up. There are so many things in the works and I feel like this blog is helping me find my place in the industry all the more. I’m still not totally sure how candid I’ll get, but once my brain is not entirely focused on my presentation, I’ll return to finding ways to carve out my own little home in the porn world.

Beautiful, Authentic, Entertaining… Porn.

I was in Montreal last week, and I had one of my lovely visits to Camille and Mike of The Art of Blowjob and Slow Motion Blowjob. I do PR/marketing/just about anything they need for their sites, and part of that means reassessing the image for what we do every now and again. I kind of nerd out to that like you wouldn’t believe. Sometimes being way too up in my brain has its benefits.

Without going all publicity overdrive here, I have to say that what they do is pretty unique and special. It’s visually stunning and they’re also a loving couple having what I genuinely think is as close to real sex as you can have while still maintaining a high aesthetic value.

It’s interesting, though, to think about what that means and whether or not we could label what we do as “real porn” as opposed to (or in addition to) beautiful porn. I did a podcast interview with Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals not that long ago (okay, well, a while back now) and then she did a great little review on our sites, which played around with the idea of authenticity which I espoused on the show. She took to task (in the nicest way possible — all in the name of the sexuality/porn geekery I know so well) the notion that any porn with high aesthetic values, attention to detail and well-placed hair/nice red lips could in fact be “real”… But that sort of begs the question: what do we mean by real?

They’re a real couple having one of the kinds of sex they really love. It’s not the only type of sex they have and they create no illusions that it’s anything other than one aspect of their expansive sex lives. They don’t elevate it above anything else, just serve to show it in what they see as its best light. That’s pretty cool, and I think serves to indicate a certain grounding in reality.

In general, I like to think of this authenticity to have more to do with the presentation of the material than the material itself. They can recreate a moment, put together a fantasy or play out a scenario without pretending like it’s anything other than what it is — the best approximation they can put together of their lives set to porn. Transparency of the process, message and intent are the dominant factors in what makes even this feel real.

Porn is made to entertain in some way, whether it’s a camera set up on a tripod for an amateur display or something as opulent and high budget as humanly possible. Despite enjoying what they do, as soon as you put it out there, you’re releasing it to the audience. That doesn’t make it less real, but it does make you cognizant of the fact that there are eyes other than your own processing what you do and it opens the door to any degree of manipulation of your representation to suit (or not suit) that audience.

While Camille and Mike do play into that idea of subtly tweaking the sex they have to be able to keep making the porn they make, I’ve witnessed them in action and I have to say that they’re about as bare bones about it as they could be. They find a time when they’re turned on, they set up in an artful but minimalist way, enjoy themselves and then go to lunch or for a coffee. The process is as simple as that, and I think that it espouses a really great blend of beauty, authenticity and entertainment.

Back Again

It feels nice and a little weird to be back here. I’m taking yet another stab at mixing some sort blend of personal anecdotes and introspection about porn, sexuality and relationships because I have all these ideas and I really want to share them. Before, I found myself writing reviews, which is good for momentum but not exactly all I want to be doing with my spare creative time. I’ll still be doing it, since I have a pretty nice stack of DVDs to plow through, but I don’t want to be limiting myself to just that.

What does this mean, practically speaking? Well, for one thing, I want to share a bit more about my intimate life. I tend to keep things relatively close to the chest as a PR person, but I’m trying to position myself a bit more broadly now, and that gives me a certain flexibility. Oh, and I’ve been pretty busy lately, sex-wise. A new city and a sense of freedom after a sexually challenging relationship liberated me. 2013 has been quite a year, and it’s only March.

Maybe it’ll manifest itself as some confessional writing. Maybe it’ll be more or less structured/stylized. More likely, it’ll be responding to the porn/sexuality culture and applying my own critical lens to things as someone with a vested interest in beautiful, intimate and independent porn. Perhaps some combination of the two.

One impetus for this definitely comes from the fact that I’m gearing up to present a paper and sit on a panel at the first ever Feminist Porn Conference in less than two weeks. I want to have a stable home base to think things out and be able to discuss the things that interest me about the kind of porn with which I engage.

The other is that I’m taking an increasingly active role as a face for the websites I work for. I knew it was likely to be the case, but the more panels I sit on, the more interviews I do and the more I get entrenched in the industry, the more I want to solidify my position as more than just a person who represents a group of websites. It’s still one of the most important things I do, but I want to prove interesting in other meaningful and natural ways.

Maybe erotica? Maybe critical thought? Maybe this’ll be a gateway drug into taking a more active role in porn? We’ll see how it shakes out, but it’ll definitely be something.

Big Beautiful Women in Porn

I was so glad to get to share my love of big beautiful women from all walks of porn on Peeperz, so I thought I’d share it here too.

Crème de la Crème Loves Curves

As somewhat of a big girl myself, I’ve always been drawn to zaftig figures on screen, both in mainstream media and for my erotic consumption. Bouncy breasts, soft tummies, ample behinds… These women show off a range of different shapes which can all be enjoyed in abundance. Perhaps because of the body politics in porn, the lovely ladies I have chosen to showcase tonight are all industry power-houses, taking care of so much more than just their beauty on film. They are invaluable to porn in so many ways. Continue Reading →

My Review of Alpha Femmes for Whack Magazine

I’ve been waiting to get my grubby little hands on a copy of Alpha Femmes for quite some time now. As a kinky femme, this is exactly the kind of porn I want to see, thank you very much. This porn is way better shot than most porn, and even stands out as some of the finest filmmaking to come out of queer porn, which generally has more attention to detail than mainstream… The editing is artfully done, the shots are full of movement and the music really adds an element to heighten the senses and set the mood for each scene.

Let’s Look Out for Each Other

A little legal advice courtesy of my column on GirlzPorn!

I’ve spent quite a fair deal of my time here at GirlzPorn extolling the virtues of positive porn, but I need to take a turn and address a trend that I’ve been noticing happening to a lot of very smart people in the creative or performance side of porn…

People take advantage of them, even in what can sometimes seem like relatively benign companies and environments. What I’m talking about isn’t coercion, blackmailing or anything quite so dramatic…

I’m speaking about the types of contracts, or lack there-of, which often end up blindsiding people who aren’t on the business side of an agreement.

If I could give one piece of advice to anyone who will have their content published, whether it’s their photography/videography or their performance on camera… Get a lawyer or familiarize yourself extensively through legal aid clinics, law students in your area, even just by doing some extensive research on Google. My Review of Dirty Dishes for Whack Magazine

Coming from a quirky UK ex-pat family, I have always had a soft spot for fine china, even vintage commemorative plates of Royal weddings of yore. I’m not quite twee enough to have the former Duke and Duchess of York smirking back at me from my mantle, but something a bit raunchier would fit the bill perfectly. When I came across DirtyDish.es (Clever URL, right?), I was immediately charmed by the concept. This is not your mother’s crockery… It’s a collection of plates featuring scenes from vintage pornography. I was able to catch up with Paul, founder of Dirty Dishes, who was kind enough to sit down with me to answer a few questions.

My Mini GirlzPorn Interview

GirlzPorn caught up with me for a little interview, touching on a few tidbits of my porn and non-porn lives alike!

Who is your favorite female porn star?

That’s a tough question, so I’ll answer a few: Dylan Ryan, Courtney Trouble, Aiden Starr, Sophia St-James, Lorelei Lee… But that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I sing, I direct/choreograph/produce plays and musicals, I do yoga/pilates/zumba, I take jazz/hip hop/contemporary dance, I dabble in burlesque, I play the ukulele poorly, I shoot/edit photos and videos and I always try to have a few volunteer gigs on the burner, mostly concerning sexuality, at-risk youth and the arts.

Favorite non-pornographic movie?

I love lots of movies, but if I had to pick one that perfectly summed up all the parts that make a perfect film, I’d have to pick Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

What was your first job?

Working at a good old fashioned bank call centre.

Chocolate or vanilla?

Vanilla, but something high quality.

What was your dream job while growing up?

Ballerina, opera singer or psychologist. One of those things is not like the other.

I Love Porn Boys!

I love boys. Some might say I’m a little boy crazy, in fact. I decided I wanted to highlight the amazing men of porn, but I have a feeling that I’m going to have to do a sequel for Crème de la Crème.

Crème de la Crème Salutes the Dudes of Porn

I’ve talked primarily about ladies so far in Crème de la Crème, but I know that a lot of Peeperz readers enjoy the gentlemen too. I know I do. There’s a big stereotype that guys in porn are ugly. I think ugly is a, well, ugly word, but I do think that a lot of guys in porn aren’t my cup of tea. More and more, men are being used as less of a prop in porn and more as featured performers, so a little more attention is going into the casting process, or so it seems. I want to shine the spotlight on a few men deserving of some recognition for their contribution to porn. Continue Reading →
