This piece ran in
GirlzPorn a few days ago, but it was actually written shortly after New Years. The XBIZ Awards have come and gone (neither
The Art of Blowjob nor
GirlzPorn won, unfortunately.) but my dress remains the talk of the town… Well, at least in my version of the story. I’ll have a full run-down (with pictures) as soon as I’m back in Montreal with my camera cord (skills!) but for now, enjoy my take on fashion/porn!
I’m really excited because I’ll be heading off to Los Angeles in exactly one week to represent The Art of Blowjob at the XBIZ Awards. We’re up for Specialty/Alternative Site of the Year (as is GirlzPorn), and that’s the perfect excuse to shed the cold Canadian winter, especially since I hate my big puffy coat. This may sound shallow, but that alone is reason enough for me. That’s what I want to address, actually. What do you wear to a porn awards show?I spent today picking out a dress for the awards and trust me, it was not an easy feat. Shopping (especially post-Boxing Day/pre-New Year’s) is challenging enough, since it seems like there’s never anything when you actually need something… It’s even harder when you’re looking to walk the line between fitting in and totally not fitting in while surrounded by porn stars.
This will be my first mainstream porn awards attendance. I’ve been lucky enough to attend the Feminist Porn Awards in Toronto, which was absolutely my cup of tea and I didn’t feel out of my element in the least. I rocked the winning combo of a purple and yellow pansy print strapless dress straight of a garden party and my septum piercing, dark eyeliner and deep red lipstick. Part sophisticated, part badass. It fit the bill perfectly.
I also attended the incredible Fleshbot Awards in New York this November, surrounded by celebrities and the hottest porn stars in the world. It was phenomenal. I decided to go with a sleeveless slate grey knee-length dress, which just happened to be beaded and sparkly as hell. When I met Alan Cumming (dream come true!) I felt like I stood out just enough to be seen with such a handsomely dressed man. In hindsight, maybe I should have opted for a kilt like he did, as that’s always a conversation starter. Never underestimate the power of mystery.
One thing I’ve noticed is that porn stars are uniformly very well dressed. Let’s face it, they know how to look good, but there are certainly a lot of bold fashion choices, fascinating vintage pieces and, of course, hair and makeup is done to the nines. It’s a lot to keep up with, but therein lies the dilemma… Do I actually want to keep up? Let’s face it… Although I’ll be representing the site, I’m not a star, nor do I want to be one. That right there had me thinking of wearing something a little more demure.
I’m a naturally buxom babe, but somehow showing off my assets feels even more inappropriate at an adult event. I guess I feel that a PR person like myself should be professional, even if boobs are a very big part of the industry. I’ve been confused as “the talent” once or twice, which makes me blush and stammer. Cute, but hard to recover from when you’re working a room.
Of course, I can’t forget that this is my first chance to walk a red carpet (at least I think there’s a red carpet…) so I still want to bring out a bit of opulence and glamour. Floor-length feels right. Besides, my gams are paler than Stoya’s, and I don’t know if that’d fly in sunny LA. I want to feel a little bit classic elegance with some contemporary style thrown in for good measure. I figure that’s a good representation of my personality and, quite honestly, my approach to porn. It just fits.I’m sure you’re all wondering… What did I end up picking? It’s a flowing floor-length midnight blue dress with capped sleeves, a high neckline and gorgeous beaded detail over the décolletage. It looks almost like a chunky necklace, but part of the dress. I’m thrilled with my purchase and I can’t wait to show it off. Even if I look out of place, at least I know I’ll look my best. It’s not that image is everything in porn, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to interpret your personal style in the most effective way possible.
