Sophie Delancey

An Off-Beat Girl in the World of Porn

Me? Interviewed?

Well damn. I got interviewed. That’s pretty rad. The wonderful Dustin from the blog Life According to the Bathroom Wall decided that he would interview me. Since I’m a behind-the-scenes kind of gal, I’m not too used to getting interviewed. That’s why I’m all excited and I’m going to share it with you now:

Behind the Scenes With Sophie Delancey

Last time I did an interview, it was with Camille Crimson, the beautiful star of The Art Of Blowjob. While Camille likes to run a small operation with boyfriend Mike Flirt handling most of the work, there is one other woman who can be attributed to The Art Of Blowjob’s success. That woman is the lovely Sophie Delancey, who handles the public relations and marketing aspects of the company. After all, a website needs advertising in order to be successful just like any other business, and Sophie’s tireless efforts are helping turn this small production company into a major player in the adult entertainment industry. I got to sit down with Sophie for a few minutes to discuss her role and relationship with Camille, where she’s headed next and even what she would be doing if she wasn’t involved in porn.

Sophie, it’s great to have you here as you are the second member of the “Beautiful Porn” family that I get to interview. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.
As someone who is usually behind the scenes (asides from radio interviews…I thrive on those!), I appreciate getting the time to talk, so thanks!

First off, how exactly did you first get involved in the adult film industry? Was it by sheer luck? Did you know the right people and just had great connections?

It’s sort of half and half. Initially when I got into porn, it was completely random. I had finished my last exam and I immediately started to look for work (like, an hour after the exam) because I’m a keener. I wanted to stay in the city a while longer and I was looking for pretty much anything. I found this job by chance on Craigslist, and the fact that it was “adult-oriented” piqued my interest, so I called, went in for an interview a couple of days later and had my first day of work exactly a week after my final exam.
At the time, it all seemed happenstance, but the truth is that I’ve always been fascinated with porn’s capacity to be more than it is. I kept writing about porn in my women’s studies classes, I was an avid follower of a lot of queer/alt sites and a lot of friends remind me about how I would go on and on about the need for revolutionary, realistic, beautiful porn, even when I was a young ‘un. I guess in hindsight, it isn’t so random after all.
Now that we know how you got your start, let’s talk about some of your current projects. You currently work with both Pornographic Love and The Art Of Blowjob. How did you hook up with Lilyanne Bloom and Camille Crimson?
It all originated from that fateful Craigslist ad. The job in question was for Mike and Camille, so they were my entry into the adult industry workforce. Lilyanne and Max’s site (Pornographic Love) is an offshoot of what we’re doing with The Art Of Blowjob, DoloremI Use My Feet and The Beautiful Porn, so it’s all related under one umbrella.
Your job in regards to the “Beautiful Porn” family is public relations and marketing. What’s that like? Is it challenging getting porn marketed properly?

It’s a really exciting job because, as it’s a small company, I wear a lot of hats. I do everything from press releases, soliciting coverage, handling interviews, doing copyrighting, creating social media/blog strategy, looking into new territories, balancing forums/tubes/writing gigs, finding potential new performers, dealing with affiliates…I’ve always been somewhat of a “multi-potentialite”, so a job that uses many different business, social, writing, problem-solving skills is the job for me.

It’s hard to get our type of porn to be marketed correctly because sometimes it feels like porn has one default setting, so everyone’s a “nasty slut who needs it bad” and that’s what people are going to assume is the right way to market everything. Having a more nuanced view of porn and a very different vocabulary is an uphill battle sometimes, but the results are really worth it, both in terms of our sites and the effect I think it has on porn in general.

Thanks to the efforts of everyone at “Beautiful Porn”, including yourself, The Art Of Blowjob is up for an XBIZ award. Much congratulations are in order. How do you feel knowing you might be able to add “award-winning porn” to your list of accomplishments?
We’ve actually already won an award for best site at the Feminist Porn Awards last April. XBIZ will be very different because it’s more industry-wide and isn’t as specific of a scope, but both are really amazing opportunities to show that we’re accessible both as a niche and for a wider audience. It’s a huge compliment to receive that kind of feedback.

On top of that, The Art of Blowjob now has a Hustler DVD coming out early next year. That’s got to be a huge boon for your career, as you’ve obviously done a great job with PR in order to help make this happen.

Setting up this deal was one of the most exciting things of my life. Getting that kind of recognition is just incredible, and being on the phone to hammer out the details with the higher-ups of Hustler made me feel like kind of a big shot. That’s the beauty of porn. Make something special and make the right kinds of connections and you’ll reap the rewards.
Aside from these sites, you also work for WHACK Magazine. How did you hook up with WHACK? What exactly is your job with them?
The WhackMag reviews are being written as we speak, but I’ve already started writing a column for GirlzPorn.com (http://girlzporn.com/the-word/guest-stars) and Peeperz
(http://www.peeperz.com/?s=sophie+delancey) so you can get a head start on reading those. For all of these writing gigs, I’ve just met the right people at adult industry events and through my connections online.
I met Miss Lagsalot of Whack at The Feminist Porn Awards, and then again at the Fleshbot Awards, and we hit it off right away.  I met several of the lovely ladies of GirlzPorn at the Playground Conference in Toronto and that lead pretty much immediately to me writing for them. I’ve had meetings with the writers and the former editor of Peeperz, and that turned me on to discussing with the new editor, and the idea for my column came up pretty organically while we were talking. People are always looking for content, so being a good writer and willing to devote a little time and effort can take you pretty far.

Before you got into being involved in adult entertainment, what did you want to do for a living?
I actually studied opera, so I originally wanted to be an opera singer. I realized throughout the course of my degree that I didn’t really want the unstable life of a performer, so I started to look into alternate careers. My big interest was arts administration and I ended up being involved in doing a lot of producing, management,
publicity, web presence maintenance and such for a lot of campus charities and arts organizations. It always felt very natural to me, so that’s where I was aiming.

How did that transition to working in porn?
As you can imagine, it was a pretty seamless transition. I always say that porn is pretty much like any other art, so it’s all the same general idea, just with different specifics. It’s all about finding ways to reach out and connect to an audience.

You’re very beautiful and obviously a very sexual person. Have you ever considered working in front of the camera? Why or why not?
I think I’m destined to remain behind the camera. I would potentially like to spread my wings and direct, though.

Off-topic for a moment, aside from porn, do you work in any other profession?
Nope. Once in a while I’ll volunteer my services for charities or arts organizations close to my heart, but that’s it. Otherwise I’m a full-time PR/Marketing person.

What kind of things do you like to do for fun?
I love directing, choreographing and producing plays and musicals. I still sing quite a fair deal, mostly opera alone, but bitchin’ karaoke too. I take jazz, contemporary and hip hop dance classes. I do yoga, Pilates and Zumba when I can. I’m trying to get better at photography, video editing and ukulele.

To a potential co-worker, what would you suggest to people that are looking into getting into your line of work, both in the adult industry and out?
Work for the right kind of people and the right company and representing them will always feel authentic.

Are you currently working on any new projects you’d like fans to know about? What’s in the future for Sophie Delancey?
I’m just going to be writing a lot, trying to blog more over at SophieDelancey.comand trying to take over the world with our beautiful porn.

Have you ever considered being affiliated with sites other than Art Of Blowjob and Pornographic Love, to get your name out there and expand your resume’?
Since I already work a full-time job with the sites, write columns for multiple porn blogs and maintain my own blog, I think much more would be a little too intense. I’m happy to help with specific projects if I can fit them into my schedule, but it would have to be for the right kind of person/company and at the right time.

As a writer, I’m trying to get my name out there as much as possible, despite it being a very competitive field. Considering you work for an online magazine, what would you suggest for people like me in regards to getting more work, getting their names out there, etc.?
Just talk to people. Everyone’s on Twitter, so just pick the site(s) you want to write for and let them know, show them some samples of your work and get the wheels turning.

Think you could put in a good word at WHACK for me? I’d love to write for them.
Sure! I could definitely do that! I still need to get finishing that first review, though, before I can get anything going.

Where can fans reach you, find out more about you and keep up with what you’re doing?
I’m on Twitter as @SophieDelancey, my Tumblr is http://sophiedelancey.tumblr.comand my blog is SophieDelancey.com.

In closing, is there anything else you’d like to add?

If there are any people (specifically couples, triads, etc…) who are looking to make their own sites, contact me, because we would love to help expand the scope of beautiful porn!
Thanks so much for talking to me today, Sophie. I know you must have a ton of things to do working in PR and marketing, so your time is greatly appreciated. I’d love to have you back some time for a follow-up interview.
You’ve got a great site here and I’m happy to be a part of it.
