Where to begin? Well, hi there. I’m Sophie Delancey and I’m an aspiring sex blogger. Aren’t we all? There is something to this thing, though – I somehow found myself working in the adult industry as a PR/marketing consultant and I love it. I’ve only been doing it for about a month and I can already see myself building a career! I take care of the promotion and brand development for a number of sites, including The Art of Blowjob, I Use My Feet, and The Beautiful Porn. Basically, I work for the lovely Camille Crimson! That’s the day job and I wanted to be completely transparent about it, but please don’t think this’ll be an unending torrent puff pieces in support of her work. Yes, I’m going to show off some of her goodies from time to time (no, really) but I’m planning on writing about a lot more than just that. I will say though that I really enjoy what I do because the company is young enough that I have a real say in what is happening and get to have a lot of input and influence regarding the way it develops. As someone fresh in the workforce, it’s not very common to have a say in anything, let alone in major decisions for the future of the company.
So, how did I start working in the industry? Short answer: responding to a Craigslist ad. That’s where all pervy adventures begin. Longer answer: I went to university to become an opera singer, got really interested in arts administration, switched majors to English lit and Sexual Diversity Studies, got into the queer and sex-positive scene and somehow found a job that would necessitate a flair for organizational administrative thinking, a love of sexuality, excellent writing skills and the ability to work closely/channel the energy of creative people. I got a membership to Suicidegirls as a gift from my boyfriend on my 18th birthday, so I’ve been loving alt porn since it was legal to do so. I’ve slowly amassed a sizeable collection of queer/indie porn DVDs and have been following folks like Courtney Trouble, Shine Louise Houston and Madison Young since I can’t even remember when. Interviewing to work in porn was kind of hilarious, because I’m this really inconspicuous short, dorky femme-type person and all of the sudden I was alluding to the minutia of pornographic culture like I was the biggest perv in the world. And I kind of am.
If I had to label my sexuality, I would go with fluid/queer. I’ve ID-ed as bisexual in the past, but obviously that’s problematic in terms of gender binary and also just not very indicative of what I like. I am lucky to have (and live with) the most amazing partner in the world – a wonderful queer boy named Jed. He’s unbelievably smart, he’s the funniest person I’ve ever met, he’s almost disturbingly charming and he’s brave as hell because he just dropped his well paying albeit boring bank job to go back to school to become a professional contemporary dancer. Basically, he’s amazing! Just typing about him made me weak in the knees so, as you can imagine, we’re very much in love. Our sexual interests and energies seem to be perfectly in sync… We’re both switches and we just have this perfect balance where, when he wants to be in control, I want to let him control me and vice versa. It’s pretty cool and it’s always just been like that. I tend to present myself on the hyper-femme side of things and he tends to be relatively butch, but our personalities and interests are all over the place and often completely eschew gender norms, which is fun. In the sack, we are very adventurous. We like toys, we like porn, we like being a little rough… The usual. All in all, we have fun.
Asides from work and sexytimes with my beloved, I am a very busy girl. Jed and I love doing yoga, although I don’t get to do nearly enough any more. I’m a big fan of hot yoga and I also swear by the free classes at Lululemon. I am taking a burlesque dance class right now, which is giving my awkward dorky self a little boost in the sexy stride department. Up until the end of high school, I was a dancer, but that has since given way to choreographing for theatre and the occasional drop-in class. Obviously since I went to school for opera, I’m a singer, but right now I don’t have the time to do much with it. I do like to bust out arias when I’m alone in my apartment, though. Jed and I have an adorable cat who is currently in heat, and therefore won’t shut up. She’s entertaining and we have earplugs, so it’s all good in the hood. We’re both vegetarians, we love cooking healthy (and not so healthy) things when we have the time and I am a huge fan of baking. On top of working for the porn company, I also fundraise for an international aid organization and do freelance translation for a few local arts organizations.
In terms of what I want to do with this blog, I’m going to start by regaling you with tales from the industry and by reviewing the porn and toys already in my life, and then I’ll hopefully I’ll be able to keep doing that by becoming a professional reviewer for a company or two. I’m also going to be commenting on the industry, on other sex blogs, on sexuality in our culture and on other non-porn things. I want to start interviewing sex-positive people from all walks of life, showcasing some erotic writing/photography and maybe even contributing some of my own. I hope you all enjoy my quirky take on sexuality and my odd foray into the world of porn.

Welcome to the blogosphere! I’m super pumped to learn more about you and I wish you all the best with your new blog! It’s true that there is a glass ceiling on the industry and I’m more than happy to see an intelligent and articulate voice in the growing movement for a sex positive sex industry.

Thank you so much! I definitely need to get on writing tonight… I seem to always get sidetracked by stuff for my job. (Ain’t it always the way.) Your comment means a lot because I really think your blog is one of the best of the bunch and I aspire for mine to be as introspective and varied. Honestly, when I saw your post on Pamela my jaw just about dropped and visions of my 3rd year lit paper about Sapphic representations in 18th century literature came flooding back. But seriously, I enjoy every facet of your blog immensely and I’m so glad that the internet brings delightful sex-positive folks together.
